TMJ

The temporomandibular joint is formed by the mandibular condyle, the glenoid cast of the temporal bone, the articular meniscus, ligaments and the joint capsule that protects and nourishes it. Unfortunately, the imbalance of any of these structures can result in pain or impairment of jaw movement.

In the chewing movement, several muscles called masticatory muscles come into play (the masseter muscles, the temporal muscles, the lateral and medial pterygoid muscles), which if stressed can cause contracture or can cause a decrease in function or the appearance of pain.
